Sarah's News

April 21, 2010

Hi Everyone,

I attended a coaches swim clinic this past weekend in San Diego and learned a lot of new swimming tools to add to our toolbox, as well as the opportunity to meet some legendary and very credible coaches in the sport. Day 1 of the clinic was all about teaching strokes, turns, and starts. Swimming strokes are never static - coaches and scientists are always evaluating Olympic swimmers and refining technique to evolve stroke efficiency. Day 2 was an impressive lineup of coaches from around the country who spoke about their coaching experiences, successes, and an overview of their swim programs - every presenter highly motivating. Day 3 was all about planning, training, and developing programs for all ages and skills. The clinic reinforced  why I love this sport - it is a small community of amazing people with integrity and who care about developing great kids through the sport of swimming. I can't wait to share some new tools with the kids.

Registration for the Davis Swim meet closes tomorrow (April 22). If you are not sure what events to sign your child up for please contact me or Debbie. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the swim meet, but Debbie and Nate will be there to support and cheer all the kids on. This is a great swim meet for first timers to participate in. There are currently 30 kids (mostly younger) signed up for the meet and it is a great team bonding and social event for both kids and parents. Saturday night the team is hosting a BBQ at the park adjacent to the pool.

A friendly reminder - swim practice is a time for your kids to have fun in the pool with their peers and coach. I know it's fun for the parents to watch the kids swim and the progress they are making, but often parents can be a distraction to the kids, especially the younger ones. As coaches, it makes our job hard to have kids getting in and out of the pool to talk to parents, we want the kids learning having fun during their entire practice time.  Thank you.

Finally, I want to thank all the parents that were able to make it to the parents meeting last week, what an amazing turnout! For those of you that were not able to make it, we are in the process of posting information from the meeting on the team website.

Friday, April 30th the High School Swim Team is hosting a swim meet and there will be no swim practice.

Thanks for letting us coach your amazing kids! Sarah

Congratulations to the following swimmers who are moving up starting with the Spring session on Monday!

Bronze to Silver: Grace Bronstone

Silver to Gold: Ella Barzel, Kate Halverson-Kolkind, Sam McGinley, Cadyn McGregor, Jane Nall, Sean Percin, Kate Rye, Hana Schlang

March 29, 2010 - Swimmer of the Month

Bronze Group – Luke Lahr

If there’s any kid who gives a 100% effort all the time, it’s Luke. Luke is a silent little competitor who always likes a good race from the starting block. With no fear of the noodle, he is our diving champion who holds the honors of the highest and farthest dive to date (he asked me to hold the noodle higher and farther, but I have to keep practice safe!). In between practicing starts he entertains all of us with his amazing, intelligent, creative mind. Luke is the kid every coach enjoys having on their team and watching them grow both in and out of the water. Congratulations Luke!

Silver Group – Spencer Thomas

It’s hard to say what goes through a “clever mind” when swimming, but this past month Spencer focused that sharp mind of his on really pushing himself. The result, he discovered a “feel for the water” and his natural talent in the pool. Spencer is one of the most relaxed kids in the water which has helped him develop good stroke technique. Spencer brings a genuine sense of humor to the group and gets along with everyone. I am very proud of all the progress Spencer has made in the last year and his choice to continue to swim - he is great asset to the team. Congratulations Spencer!

February 28, 2010

For the month of February, swimmers in the Silver and Bronze groups were asked to select their Swimmer of the Month. In addition to who they chose, they were also asked to explain why they selected that person.

Silver Group - Anna Kates received the most votes. Here are some of the reasons why Anna should be Swimmer of the Month.

“She really works hard.”

“Hard working. Good swimmer. Fun. Always does her best.”

“I think Anna Kates should be swimmer of the month because she is getting really good at swimming and I think she could move to Gold soon.”

“Because she is a great swimmer.”

“Because she has worked really hard and been a good sport.”

“I vote for Anna Kates because she works hard everyday and is kind to everyone.”

Thank you for signing into the new TTST website and checking out the latest information from the "Coaches Corner". We will be using the new website to communicate all the latest and greatest information from the pool deck.

Although the Silver and Bronze groups celebrated a few birthdays last week (Kate Halverson-Kolkind, Sean Percin, and Luke Lahr), the groups still managed to work hard and have some fun. Some of the kids are preparing for the upcoming swim meet this weekend in Minden, NV so we will all be concentrating on starts, turns, and finishes.

Silver and Bronze groups will be nominating Swimmer of the Month for February (instead of Coach Sarah), so kids should be thinking about who they want to nominate and why throughout the month.

Important Announcements:

Monday, February 15, is President's Day and there will be NO swim practice.

February 15 is also the beginning of ski/skate week. Practice schedule for Senior/Gold/Silver is from 3:30-5pm. Bronze and Minnows practice at their normal time of 5-6pm.

Thanks,

Coach Sarah :)

January 25, 2010

I Hope everyone survived all the storms last week and had a chance to enjoy the fresh snow. Thanks for your patience with the snow days and practice schedule communication. When in doubt, there is swim practice.

It was a lot of fun to coach all the groups last week and a fun opportunity to work with the older kids. For those of you that made it to the pool last week, your starts have improved 100%. The starting blocks should become a permanent fixture on the pool deck as a reminder for us to practice starts and turns every day. Coach Debbie returns to the pool deck today from her vacation - a little bit of a shock to come home to 5ft of snow after playing on the beaches in Roatan Honduras. Welcome home Debbie!

This Wednesday, January 27, is a minimum school day. Minimum school day practice schedule is as follows:
Senior and Gold Groups* (High School/Middle School) - 12:00 to 2:00
Silver - 4:00-5:15 (normal practice time)
Bronze - 5:00-6:00 (normal practice time)
Minnows - 5:00-5:30/5:30-6:00 (normal practice time)
*If you are in elementary school and swim in either group, your practice begins after school at normal practice time.
All minimum school days will follow the same schedule, the next minimum school day is February 3.

Friday, January 29 is the Dual Swim Meet with the Truckee Tahoe Masters Swim Team. Warmup is at 5:00, meet starts at 5:30. Events include 50's, 100's, 200IM, and a few relays. TTST parents are welcome to participate too. If you and/or kids want to swim, sign ups will be at the pool Friday until 5:15.

Our next swim meet is February 13 & 14 in Minden, NV; I hope everyone on the team will join us for one or both days - it's a great meet for all ages and all skills. You can sign up on ome.swimconnection.com (remember, it's a Pacific Meet). Online meet entry closes midnight February 3.

Thanks,
Coach Sarah

Note from Coach Sarah…

Twenty TTST swimmers traveled to Carson City this weekend to participate in the 2010 Carson Tiger Sharks Polytathlon. Although a relatively small group, TTST swimmers made a strong splash in and out of the pool!

Hana Schlang, Chloe Gorman, Zoe Klenke, and Shannon Sundale all competed in their first official swim meet and did outstanding. The swim meet veterans on the team rallied with a great display of team spirit and support to make the swim meet initiation a great experience. Not only was the team spirit present for the newcomers, but it was out in force when Alex Straw, Kayla Redner, Brittney Straw, and Jake Hamilton were all attempting to break the 1 minute barrier in their respective events. Strong efforts by all of you and personal bests to be proud of. Other personal best performances in the pool from Maddie Monson, Anna Kates, Amanda Novak, Niki Kates, Ingrid Suter, and an amazing 100 IM from little 7-year old Emily Monson.

Great swims and personal bests added up for a number of TTST swimmers who finished in the top 3 and earned a High Point award at the swim meet:

Annika Thayer, 1st Place 6 & Under Girls

Kate Halverson-Kolkind, 3rd Place 8 & Under Girls

Sean Percin, 2nd Place 8 & Under Boys

Cooper deRyk, 2nd Place 10 & Under Boys

Brittney Straw, 3rd Place 11/12 Girls

Jake Hamilton, 1st Place 11/12 Boys

Congratulations to everyone who swam at Carson and thanks for a very fun two days of swimming! Thank you to Lilia Suter and Lynn Redner for wearing your blue and white and officiating this weekend.

Our next swim meet is February 13 & 14 in Minden, NV; I hope everyone on the team will join us for one or both days.

If an official snow day is called, TTST still holds swim practice. However, with the weather predictions this week please check your email for updates on practices.
